The MCAS is a behavioral measure that evaluates parent-child attachment in middle childhood/early adolescence (9 to 14 years), taking into account developmentally relevant indicators of attachment at this age. It focuses on a child’s affect and behavioral manifestations in an 8-minute parent-child discussion of a conflict in their relationship. The MCAS employs a dimensional scoring system of attachment patterns in middle childhood that provides scores for attachment security, avoidance, ambivalence, disorganization-disorientation, and controlling patterns (caregiving/role-confused and hostile/punitive) for a specific parent-child relationship (with mother or father).
For whom:
This workshop is intended to provide a conceptual overview of the MCAS and video examples of the attachment patterns. The target audience is researchers and clinicians interested in gaining more knowledge about attachment and its manifestations in middle childhood.
The MCAS may be helpful for clinicians and related professionals who are working with children in this age range in applied settings as understanding how attachment is manifested at this age can inform case conceptualization.
The MCAS can be helpful for researchers studying attachment at this age as it provides a conceptual understanding of all attachment patterns documented in middle childhood and their behavioral manifestations. This workshop does not substitute for the full MCAS training; however, those later undergoing the 4-day full training and obtaining reliability on the MCAS, required for its use, are eligible for a discount. The next full training will be via zoom, October 17-18 and 24-25, 2024.
Workshop Objectives:
1) to provide a conceptual overview of the MCAS;
2) to briefly review administration and scoring methodology; and
3) to illustrate behavioral manifestations of attachment patterns in middle childhood via showing and discussing video-recorded parent-child interactions.
Cost:
Students and Postdoctoral fellows: $180 Euros
Professionals: $280 Euros
