Brief presentation:
Whereas most attachment measures are based on a conceptualization of attachment as a general trait of the person, the AMMI allows the measurement of relationship-specific attachment. Early, past or ongoing relationships can be investigated, whether with childhood caregivers or with romantic partners.
The AMMI is suitable for adolescents, adults, and the elderly and provides continuous scores on four attachment scales (security, deactivation, hyperactivation, disorganization).
The measure of disorganization does not require that participants report traumatic events and can be used with maltreated samples.
Audience:
Researchers: The AMMI is particularly appropriate for the study of attachment networks and has proven useful in understanding how different attachment models combine to predict mental health outcomes. It lends itself to the examination of different models’ cumulative or interaction (e.g., buffering) effects. A measure of internal working model pervasiveness is also proposed for the understanding of pathological socioemotional functioning (e.g., personality disorders).
Practitioners: The AMMI is also useful for clinical practice. Administration in itself is an opportunity for clients to elaborate on their feelings and reactions in close relationships, and to notice potential repetition of relational patterns. Coding of attachment in the different relationships helps the clinician draw hypotheses as to where some dysfunctional attachment strategies or feelings of insecurity come from and thereby determine adapted therapeutic targets.
Objectives: At the end of the 2-day training, participants will be able to administer the AMMI and to use the coding system.
